Moderation Skills

Sometimes people consume more alcohol than they intend to because they are not familiar with some simple moderation techniques. There are many ways to slow consumption and absorption of alcohol. Some techniques include:

  • Put your drink down between sips.
  • Use a can cooler or insulated cup to keep the beverage cold.
  • Count usual sips and use more sips than usual.
  • Time how long it takes for you to consume a drink, and take more time.
  • Reduce size of sips.
  • Avoid drinking contests or games.
  • Avoid fast drinkers.
  • Ice beverages so that they stay cold longer.
  • Alternate with non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Mix your own drinks so that you can control the amount of alcohol.
  • Choose lower alcohol content beverages.
  • Avoid doing shots.
  • Bring your own beverages.
  • Get involved in activities (dancing, video games, pool, darts, talking, singing, etcetera).
